WHEN TO GO
Rome does not have a bleak climate. You can probably consider July and August as the worst time to go. Is when it’s warmer, there are more tourists and the prices are higher. May and June, along with September and October are the most recommended months: midseason prices, optimum temperature without much rain and an acceptable number of tourists.
PROBLEMS AND ANNOYANCES
Rome is the same safe as any other European big city. As always, you should be aware of pickpockets in tourist areas or public transport. Traffic can be the main danger; in Italy driving fast and not respect all the signals are expected; motorcycle driving on the sidewalk is more than usual. The city bus system is a real pain.
WHERE TO STAY
In Rome there are many attractions and although can be visited on a more or less logical route, so no location is excellent (there’s always something interesting far away) but for this very reason, there are many good locations. In addition, although is one of the world’s great tourist capitals, prices are not as expensive as you might expect. Between 80 and 100 € you can find many good hotels and apartments in central areas, something unthinkable in cities like London or Paris.
WHERE TO EAT
Cheap, fast and low quality, although better than expected: the trucks. These mini foodtrucks were invented in Italy before they became fashionable on TV. They are selling all kinds of drinks and snacks, but the main thing is that they sell take away pizzas; they cut them and put the two halves together, is a sandwich-like pizza. In addition, they are in many tourist areas.
Also cheap and low quality, but recommended and a very interesting experience: the Italian aperitif. Starts at 7 pm, you ask for a drink (usually low-grade alcohol) and can eat all you want. Generally there is a free buffet with basic Italian products: pasta, sausages, cheese, etc, but for 7 or 8 euros you can eat till you sleep. The most famous is Freni e Frizioni.
Not so cheap but without being expensive, good quality and the most Italian environment in Rome: Trastevere. Those who want to eat good Italian food without feeling robbed have to go this far. I cannot remember any particular restaurant when I was there, we simply choose one and it was very good.
Expensive, not better quality than in Trastevere but central location, Piazza Navona. There are many restaurants, all offering prices and more or less similar products in terraces on the square itself. They are expensive, but again, considering the environment, affordable.
