- Number of days neede for a visit: at least 2.
- My rating: 4/5.
On my first solo backpacking trip to New Zealand in 2004 I already found people saying how wonderful the Grand Canyon was. The same thing happened in the following trips. Everyone was saying: it’s just a hole in the ground, but it’s so massive… My will to visit it increased more and more as I met more backpackers who had this place in their top 10, but could not find a good time to go, because my chance to travel used to be in winter. In 2011 I decided to wait no longer and went in February; I think it was a good idea, it was not very cold and there were few turists.
The canyon is certainly no more than a massive indent. It is the most famous, but it is not the largest in the world (the largest are in inaccessible areas in Greenland, Antarctica and the Himalayas). Yet it is huge, 29 km wide and 446 km long. The truth is that it is not in my top 10, but don’t underestimate its fame, I think it is a must for every traveler.
