Guilin Prefecture was the first place that Chinese government decided to promote as a tourist destination back in the middle of the 20th century. Soon Guilin City, its capital,went from being a small charming town to a huge city; this motivated independent travelers to look for a redoubt more calm and in harmony with the nature. Yangshuo was the chosen destination, with a wonderful location surrounded by karst mountains, next to the Li River and close to Yulong River, which allowed not only multiple possibilities to enjoy the landscape on foot or by bicycle, but also recreational navigation; In fact, when people talk about the famous Guilin mountains, they usually refer to those near Yangshuo.

Unfortunately, it has long ceased to be a secret. The small town of backpackers has sold its soul to tourism and its main streets are a jumble of restaurants, bars and travel agencies, but luckily its location can not change. Yangshuo has literally grown around many peaks, which seem to sprout in the middle of the city, is the place of arrival or departure of the spectacular Li River cruise, and its surrounding countryside offers excellent views, in a much more rural environment than that nearby to Guilin City. It is also the basis of one of the most acclaimed shows in China, the Impressions Liu Sanjie, with more than 600 actors and dancers and directed by Zhang Yimou.
