KLUNGKUNG PALACE OR TAMAN GILI

Also called Puri Agung Semarapura, it belonged to one of the 9 kingdoms that existed in Bali (they should not to be very large), currently Klungkung. I admit that when I visited I thought I had been driven (I went with a tour) to another temple. It was seriously damaged during the Dutch occupation in 1908, so most of it is rebuilt:

• 25 km east of Ubud.
• Open from 8:30 am to 6 pm.
• Adult ticket Rp 50.000 (it used to cost Rp 12,000 just 3 years ago).

There are several buildings:

• The Kertha Gosa, the supreme court of the kingdom. The ceiling is completely covered with paintings in the kingdom of Klungkung style; they are human representations of scenes related to myths.
• The most famous is the Bale Kambang or floating pavilion. Surrounded by water; the ceiling is also completely covered with the same style paintings.

• The Semerajaya museum. Very small. What caught my eye were the ceremonial attires.

UBUD ROYAL PALACE

Also called Puri Sareng Agung. The Royal Family of Ubud, another of the 9 realms of Bali, still exists and lives here. In the same area is the temple Pura Marajan Agung, noted for its carvings and its main gate.

• Open from 8 am to 7 pm.
• Free admission.

You can walk around it almost entirely, except the royal family apartments and its private part of the temple.
