TORONTO: GETTING THERE AND AWAY BY LAND

ESPAÑOL

TRAIN

The central station is Union, just 300 meters east of the CN Tower. Its architecture deserves a quick visit, although in 2016 it is under renovation. Please note:

  • There are different railway companies, depending on where you intend to go. In Ontario, the main short distance company is Go Transit and long distance is Via.
  • BOOKING ONLINE ON ADVANCE IS VITAL to get cheap rates: not getting the cheapest Via fare called “Escape” will make you pay more than double.
  • For any destination further than Montreal on the east and Thunder Bay on the west, is cheaper and saves time to go by plane, and the same for any destination in the United States further away than Buffalo or Detroit. I flew from Chicago for 40 €. If you are a train lover, going to Vancouver will take you three days and a half.

Most common destinations, all of them by Via:

BUS

To consider:

  • In the center there are two stations:
    • The central station is Metro Toronto Coach Terminal, in the middle of Bay Street, just north of City Hall and scarce 1 km from Union Station:
      • Greyhound. The same company as in other countries like Australia and the United States. It is the one that offers the greatest number of destinations.
      • And Megabus, Coach Canada’s low-cost company, offering interesting destinations usually at lower prices.
      • Others: New York Trailways (south) and Ontario Northland (north).
    • From Union Station itself, Go Transit Company buses go to areas of Greater Toronto.
  • As in the train, BOOK AHEAD ON INTERNET AND YOU MAY SAVE 50% OR MORE.
  • Similarly, from a certain distance, it makes no sense to use the bus if you can fly, saving both time and money.

VEHICLE RENTAL

Personally, I recommend using a global company, because if there are any problems, having a physical office in your city of origin usually facilitates the procedures. All major companies are in Toronto, with offices in both airports and downtown. The car rental prices in Canada are quite competitive, although it should be noted that the distances are big.

Traffic in the city itself and surrounding highways is very dense.
